8 August 2018 – In a personal motivation, Bittymacbeth was inspired to take action to help victims of human trafficking and exploitation. Upon learning how close this grim crime is to home, she pledged to do something practical for the cause. She puts it well – it’s not just, “one like equals one prayer”, but going beyond just talking about it and taking virtual action on social media platforms, she put her emotions into lyrics and music, not your usual expression of Comfortable Sympathy when hearing of such horrific abuses and happenings of modern day slavery in our current day.

Human trafficking is a global crime and it is happening locally right here on our streets. Singapore is a popular transit hub and destination point for trafficking activities. Seen as a shining hub of hope and promise, traffickers bait potential victims with false promises of a job and a salary, all with the intent to exploit them for profit. Compounding factors include lack of employment opportunities, the desire for a better life, isolation from family, poverty, and a lack of education and skills.

The Singapore government is committed to tackling human trafficking and since 2010 has put together an Inter-Agency Taskforce comprising nine government ministries and bodies working together to combat the problem. In 2014, HAGAR was identified as a suitable agency to provide trauma recovery services and assistance to survivors of human trafficking in Singapore, and has since been working closely with the government to receive victims and help them by providing trauma recovery, education, vocational skills training, befriending services, legal aid, and resettlement assistance.

Bittymacbeth is one fine example of how the public can play a part in bringing to light this illicit crime that evades law enforcement and preys on the hopes of people to exploit and devastate lives. Through her Trace Launch & Benefit Show, she raised $2,130.00 through ticketing, merchandise sales and donations. Whatever your skills, you can do something practical to raise funds for their recovery and awareness of their untold stories.

This would be the artist’s first time putting a social cause behind her gig. We are certain it won’t be her last. Until your next show, Bittymacbeth, thank you for using your talents to speak up for the voiceless, and for making a dent in the fight against human trafficking and modern day slavery. May you be blessed many folds over!
